Luke Walsh recently asked a question regarding the #Barwon double swag I regulalry use :
"Hi mate, I’m looking at the Dune “Barwon Double” swag you reviewed. How is it faring after a bit more use. Do you think it is better than the top entry dome swags like the dune outback? And how did the single go besides the zip. I am 6’4″ so an tossing up between the single vs double, more room for me vs more room in the tray. Cheers – Luke"
G’day Luke & thanks for the inquiry.
In response to your questions – it’s fairing up just great. No tears, no leaks, no issues at all honestly. Put it this way – when it’s on sale ( often at the #anaconda club member price of $245-$270 ) I would grab one of these everyday over the well known and very HEAVILY promoted Chinese made products through a particular supacentre specialising in 4WD products because they’ve had nothing but complaint after complaint. India make very good textile products, its a huge industry to them so I believe honestly that even though they’re not the highest paid workers, there is more pride in their work and the end product reflects this.
But yeah, all round it’s just a good honest heavy duty thick material robust swag that I can confidently say I’ll have for many years to come.
The single I had I returned after a month due to the zipper being very catchy and grabby and no questions asked Anaconda swapped it on the spot. I then paid the little bit extra and ‘upscaled’ to the double which was great ! You can’t get that sort of service from cheap online retailers.
As far as the top entry, at a guess I would say they’re probably as good in quality but they’re just not my preference. When I camp, even in cold and / or wet weather I still love to leave one or both sides up a bit. I like to hear and smell the bush while I’m in my swag and it’s a bit harder to do this with a top entry swag in wet weather. You leave the top rolled back through the night camping, especially where we camp, and the dew overnight would saturate you. Horses for courses though in the same token if you camp in Cape York in summer and want to stare at the stars then a top entry is a little more open for view where as the side entry style, like the Barwon, obviously have the spreader bar running across the middle and the sides roll up so it may impair a slight bit of your vision….it’s only a small thing but it’s something to consider. I’d rather side entry for 90% of my camping style and when I get to Cape York, I’ll just be happy either way just to be there !
Lastly to your third question, the single was fine, I slept on it a couple of times with my youngest daughter and it was a little cozy to say the least. That’s why I jumped at upgrading to the double, so more room for the both of us and a sh*tload of room when I’m on my own. I’m the same height as you and I still have a few inches between my feet and the end of the swag as they’re 2100 long so….. The single too was the old design without the extra flap of canvas so if you pulled it too tight to maximise water run off, then the zipper was too tight and last thing you want at 2am with rain is getting up to adjust and fix. So loosen for the zippers sake and then water would pool on the top and I was paranoid about that so…… I grabbed the double and honestly have not thought of any other option for sleeping - PERIOD !
Cheers
